Structural Engineering Formulas, Second Edition

Preference :
Analysis of structures, regardless of its purpose or complexity, is generally performed in the following
order:
• Loads, both permanent (dead loads) and temporary (live loads), acting upon the structure are computed.
• Forces (axis forces, bending moments, shears, torsion moments, etc.) resulting in the structure are
determined.
• Stresses in the cross-sections of structure elements are found.
• Depending on the analysis method used, the obtained results are compared with allowable or ultimate
forces and stresses allowed by norms.
