Structural Stability Theory and Practice: Buckling of Columns, Beams, Plates, and Shells

Structural Stability Theory and Practice

Sukhvarsh Jerath

Preference :

The material in this book covers the failure of structures due to buckling and structural instability. The book represents an effort to comprehensively describe the principles and theory of structural stability of different types of structures. The failures due to structural instability depend on the structural geometry, size, and stiffness. It is important to understand structural instability failures because using higher-strength materials will not prevent these failures. More structures are failing due to instability because of the increased use of high strength materials and larger structures, such as long bridges, tall buildings, vast sports, and public arenas, large storage tanks, bigger airplanes, larger engines, turbines, motors, etc. The enlarged size increases the slenderness of the members of a structure, such that these members reach their stability limit before their material strength. If one looks at the design procedures of different codes, it becomes clear that in many situations the maximum forces members can support is governed by structural instability.

This book takes a real-world view of technology. A big advantage I have as a writer for Forbes.com and an advisor in the tech world is that I get to talk to many talented people in the AI field—and this helps me to identify what is really important in the industry. I also get to learn about case studies and examples of what works. This book is organized in a way to cover the main topics in AI—and you do not have to read each chapter in order. Artificial Intelligence Basics is meant to be a handbook.

Ductile Design of Steel Structures, 2nd Edition

Ductile Design of Steel Structures, 2nd Edition

Michel Bruneau

Preference :

Comprehensive coverage of the background and design requirements for plastic and seismic design of steel structures.
Thoroughly revised throughout, Ductile Design of Steel Structures, Second Edition, reflects the latest plastic and seismic design provisions and standards from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The book covers steel material, cross-section, component, and system response for applications in plastic and seismic design, and provides practical guidance on how to incorporate these principles into structural design.
Three new chapters address buckling-restrained braced frame design, steel plate shear wall design, and hysteretic energy dissipating systems and design strategies. Eight other chapters have been extensively revised and expanded, including a chapter presenting the basic seismic design philosophy to determine seismic loads.

Content :
  • 1 Introduction
  • 2 Structural Steel
  • 3 Plastic Behavior at the Cross-Section Level
  • 4 Concepts of Plastic Analysis
  • 5 Systematic Methods of Plastic Analysis
  • 6 Applications of Plastic Analysis
  • 7 Building Code Seismic Design Philosophy
  • 8 Design of Ductile Moment-Resisting Frames
  • 9 Design of Ductile Concentrically Braced Frames
  • 10 Design of Ductile Eccentrically Braced Frames
  • 11 Design of Ductile Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames

Railway Transportation Systems Design, Construction and Operation

Railway Transportation Systems Design

Pyrgidis, Christos N

Preference :

The development of railway technology reached an early peak and then was found to be in question. During the past decade it has not only managed to rise again, but also be on the cutting edge of technology in many countries. The term ‘railway transportation systems’ includes all means of transport whose rolling systems involve at least one iron component (steel wheels on rails or rubber-tired wheels on steel guideway). Because of this, this book examines only transport systems that have this particular characteristic in common.

Content :
  • Definition
  • Constituents
  • The Railway System Technique
  • Classification of Railway Systems
  • The Capabilities of the Railway System
  • Historical Overview of the Railway, and Future Perspectives
  • Classification of Loads
  • Vertical Loads on Track
  • Transversal Loads on Track
  • Longitudinal Forces

Barry’s Advanced Construction of Buildings, 4th Edition

Barry’s Advanced Construction of Buildings, 4th Edition

Barry, Robin

Preference :

The Introduction volume has retained the same chapter structure, with changes made within chapters to improve readability. The introductory chapter has been rewritten to better explain the process of construction and to place greater emphasis on the environmental impact of construction. The material on timber-framed construction has been moved to this volume, which has allowed for simplification, rewriting, and renaming of Chapter 5 to better reflect the content on loadbearing wall construction. Scaffolding can now be found in the Introduction volume and the material on foundations has been restructured in both volumes to remove repetition.

Content :
  • 1 Introduction
  • 2 Offsite Construction
  • 3 Pile Foundations, Substructures and Basements
  • 4 Single‐Storey Frames, Shells and Lightweight Coverings
  • 5 Structural Timber Frames
  • 6 Structural Steel Frames
  • 7 Structural Concrete Frames
  • 8 Envelopes to Framed Buildings
  • 9 Lifts and Escalators
